I spoke at a European Public Health Association webinar in support of the American scientific community alongside experts in public health, political science. This is what we said.
“With the US retreating from its historical leadership in global science and public health, Europe has an opportunity and a responsibility to fill the void”
I agree with almost all of this article apart from this sentence. Does Europe have more of a responsibility than any other party to fill this void? Should there be hierarchical leadership in science and public health?
It affects everyone and feels like a responsibility of all. If the reason that European countries have a “responsibility” is because they are better resourced, then maybe that’s something we should try to address along side this fall of American leadership - rather than building the same thing again but with Europe at the top.
Tools of oppression cannot be used to dismantle it and so on and so forth…
I want to reiterate that I am pro-this article and love Kit’s stuff, but let’s make sure we are not limited by our lack of imagination in a better world
